Today the rains kept us from the beach, either rain from a front that had moved in, or the early bands from tropical storm Ernesto.  We went back to Roanoke Island, and went to the festival park, where they have a recreated village settlement and the Elizabeth II, an accurate reproduction of the kind of ships they sailed here from England. Outer Banks – day 2

Today we decided to give our skin a rest and not go back to the beach, tempting as it was (and knowing a tropical storm was on its way at the end of the week). Instead we went to Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the highest sand dunes in the east coast, I think. The heat was baking hot, and so was the sand, and we hiked around and flew our kite and tried to stay cool. Outer Banks – day 1

We arrived last night at our rental house in Kill Devil Hills, less than a mile from where the Wright brothers flew their airplane. Very nice house, much to our surprise because we got it so cheap! Anyhow, we spent the first day at the beach, calling it quits sometime in the middle of the afternoon, and discovering several hours later we should have called it quits earlier or reapplied the sunscreen!
