May 10 Brown Family Update

Dear friends and family, It is with great excitement and anticipation that we share with you about our progress this past month. First of all, it is very likely that we will be heading to Kenya at the end of June! Yeah! God has completely blown us away by continually providing for the financial side of things, as well as for all of our other needs. We have been in the process of wrapping up life in Virginia by trying to spend special time with all the people here whom we have grown to love so deeply, tying up the loose ends of our work and home life, and packing up to move. This whole experience has changed us. We had heard that this process actually teaches you many important lessons for the mission field – it’s so true! We have learned so much about trust, as this entire year has consisted of life completely out of our control. God has brought healing in many areas: in our personal lives, in our marriage, and in other relationships. He has brought us to a place where we are actually OKAY with getting rid of most of our earthly possessions – stuff that we have been holding on to for years, stuff we have loved and cherished. He has had us in a wonderful place (Dulles Community Church) these past five years, where we have been loved on and taken care of, stretched and challenged, inspired and directed. We have grown in our appreciation and love of our amazing families and the support they have shown us as they let us...

Rocky Mountain High

Last week we had an incredible trip to Denver. A really really refreshing time of catching up with friends, leading worship at the church we used to be on staff at, enjoying the view, eating Colorado style pizza, playing stand-by roullette at DIA. We were blessed by so many friends and family there, and came away feeling incredibly encouraged and commissioned to the work God has called us to. A quick update for this week: * Our monthly support pledges now stand at 77%, props to our God! * We have 4 weeks to raise the final 23% (about $1100/month) in pledges. If you, your church, or someone you know would like to join our support team, just fill out this card, and email it back to us at andy (at) brownfamily (dot) ws. * Our home church interviewed someone for our job last weekend, a really talented worship leader from Texas. Please pray with us that God would call someone to our position and that the transition would be smooth for our congregation here. * We have a huge load of things to sell in the community garage sale this weekend. So much, in fact, that I’ve rented a U-Haul to get it all there (way more stuff than the space we’ve been alotted will hold!). Please pray for good weather and that we would sell as much as we can. We’re counting on the proceeds from this to help us set up our home in Nairobi. * We’re not even unpacked from our move 2 weeks ago (to temporary missionary housing) and we’re busy re-packing our things...

Africa Update – April 2007

Wow! Lately our lives have been a living, breathing testimony of God’s provision and faithfulness. Truly, when He calls, He also provides. Below we’ve shared some of the amazing things that He has done in and around us over the past month or so, along with some updates on what’s coming in the next few months… We closed on our house this month. Everything came together without any problems. We are currently renting back from our wonderfully generous and flexible friends, the Katzers. We’re in the process of sorting through most of our stuff – storing some and selling most. We will be moving on April 14th to the vacant (yet furnished!) home here in South Riding of some other friends of ours, who are living currently in North Africa. We’ll live rent-free there until we leave Virginia at the end of May. We have made an agreement with a family who is moving away from Nairobi. We will be purchasing their entire household and car and will move into that house (for rent) when we are finished with all of our Orientation activities in Africa. This will be our home, most likely, for the next two years, at least! Our boys have been accepted into West Nairobi School for next fall. WNS is a Christian, American-style school where many missionary kids attend, as well as other international families and Kenyans. We visited it last year and were very impressed with the campus and all we heard about the school. Some dear friends of ours have agreed to purchase our mini-van before we go. From the proceeds from the...

Update

I realize I’m not doing a very good job at keeping up with the weekly posting commitment we made, so today I’m going to quickly bring everything up to speed on where we’re at: We sold our house this week. That’s right, we are no longer home owners, and have made our last mortgage payment for a long time! It’s actually a very liberating feeling, although there is this pit in our stomach that we have done something irreversible and drastic! We’ll be moving (within South Riding). Our good friends, and missionaries, who are currently on the field have offered to let us stay in their house until we leave the area, rent free. Our fundraising is coming along. We’ve very nearly raised all of our outgoing expenses, and are about 44% there on our monthly pledges. To get involved, click here. Thank you to everyone who is praying for us and supporting us financially! All in all, we are totally blown away by God’s hand in all of this. We are completely assured that we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing, and that he will continue to work all things together for his glory, getting us on the field in his perfect...

Prayer letter (Winter 2006)

Merry Christmas from the Browns! We just got our Christmas tree up, and we’re already writing our “Christmas” letter (a big step for us)! We hope your holiday season has started off well and your tree is up! Things are going well here. Life is busy and in full swing as we are enjoying our ministry at Dulles Community Church, spending time with our kiddos, and giving LOTS of piano lessons. Robbie, who is eight and in 2nd grade, keeps busy playing with Legos and video games, practicing piano, losing teeth, and running around playing with his buddies. Avery, who is four and in preschool, learned to ride a bike this summer and is as happy-go-lucky as ever – following his brother around! Sydney is two now and talking and singing up a storm. Every place we go, someone is exclaiming how cute she is (what can we say?)! The big news… Two weeks ago we were officially “appointed” as missionaries with Africa Inland Mission. We hope to be moved to Nairobi, Kenya by next July to serve as full-time missionaries there! The process was prompted by Andy’s trip to North Africa which made a profound impression upon him. I (Lesa) had felt drawn towards missions, particularly Africa, since I was 15 and had pursued the subject in college and seminary. So when he came back on fire, I wasn’t sure what to think! We prayed for four months. We eventually decided that we were being called to go somewhere, we just weren’t sure where! We took a wonderful trip to North Africa and Kenya last spring, which confirmed...
